Devaka Weerakoon

Devaka Weerakoon is a conservation biologist and Professor of Zoology at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. With a PhD in Biological Sciences from Illinois State University, he’s spent over three decades teaching and researching ecology, mammals, human–wildlife conflict, wetland ecosystems, and invasive species management. Devaka advises Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Environment on species assessments and champions nature‑based climate mitigation efforts. His work, spans human–elephant conflict studies, rail‑infrastructure impacts on wildlife, freshwater fish genetics, avitourism development, and ecosystem service valuation in Sri Lankan landscapes. He aims to bridge scientific research with environmental policy and community conservation, using data‑driven approaches to guide sustainable land use and wildlife protection across Sri Lanka.
